• A bit of this, a bit of that, then suddenly it’s race season!

Race season is almost upon us. One week to go before my first race, WTS Abu Dhabi.

I love racing and after a long winter of hard training it’s like a little reward to get racing and see the hard work paying off. I’ve spent most of the winter in the UK but have made 2 trips to Spain in January and February to get a bit of a break from the harsh, cold weather. In January I was fortunate to spend some time with some of the very lovely British girls and have recently returned from the second trip in February with my training group plus some great, enthusiastic kids from the London Academy. We go to Aguilas in the very south of Spain where you are guaranteed sunshine, quiet roads, fabulous cycling and warm enough water to do a few sea swims.

I like to run a bit of cross country in the off season and had two lovely runs in both the Surrey Championships and the South of England Championships. Cross country in the UK is very different to South Africa. You are just about guaranteed a mud bath and it is very hard going underfoot. I love it!

I was also fortunate to be asked by the ITU to represent them at the Jabra annual seminar in Sweden. Jabra are a new sponsor of the WTS and it is great to have their support. I did a motivational talk and took the delegates on a run the next morning where the Jabra Pulse headphones were tested out. Pretty cool wireless headphones with an inbuilt heart rate monitor.

The main reason for this blog is to thank a great bunch of people who will be making it possible for me to race this season. I spoke with Road to Rio late last year on some of the difficulties facing South African athletes http://www.sascoc.co.za/2014/11/19/sanders-upbeat-about-sa-triathlon-but-says-funding-will-be-vital/ . I’ve been very fortunate to have some incredible people helping me out this year. Massive shout outs go to luxury goods company Troubadour www.troubadourgoods.com and the Bahrain Triathlon club who have gone above and beyond to assist me. A special thank you to Allan Sword and Toby Leyland. My local club here in London, Optima Racing Team continues to support me and I want to especially thank Kamal Jabre as well as Navarino Capital and James Marler.

I have a fabulous bunch of sponsors without whom my life as a triathlete would be quite difficult. They are Iffley Road, Zone 3 wetsuits, Amanzi Swimwear, Dassi Bikes, GU Energy UK and Daniel Doy, Massage Therapist.

With the season opening next week I’m very grateful to all the wonderful people who support me. I’m really excited to get racing. Let’s go do this!!!
