• Counting the days!

It’s less than 3 weeks to go until the Commonwealth Games! Head is down and we’re moving towards that final phase of hard training before the excitement begins in Glasgow.

This will be my second major games and my first Commonwealth Games and I’m really elated to be sharing this experience with Richie & Katie who were at the London Olympics with me as well as superstars Henri and Wian. We are gonna have one mean relay team…watch out for us! (I’ll be competing in the individual event on the 24th July & relay 26th July).

2014 has probably been one of my best years yet thus far. I’ve done 7 races so far 5 of which I am exceptionally happy with my results. The highlights so far are probably being crowned African Champion for the 3rd consecutive year and a 10th place in the Yokohama leg of the World Triathlon Series. It’s a hard task being asked to perform week in week out at races and huge respect must go to Javier Gomez & Gwen Jorgenson for racing so consistently well and so often! I will be sitting out the Hamburg leg of the World Series to concentrate on Commies. I had a very hard but exceptional training block after being half cocked with an ear infection in London and am currently in the middle of another. The aim for 2014 has always been the Commonwealth Games and I believe there is much more to still come from me in 2014.

A major games is exciting and unpredictable. There are no points, there is no prize money…just 3 medals up for grabs and an opportunity that only crops up every two to four years.

So here I sit, with less than 3 weeks and I’m excited and honoured to be representing South Africa at the Commies and I hope to do you all proud.

Thanks to my sponsors and supporters for believing and supporting me through this journey. Iffley Road, Amanzi Swimwear, Triathlon South Africa, Dassi Bikes, Optima Racing Team, Gu Energy, Zone 3 wetsuits…you are all fab!

    Thanks for reading,

    Gill x
