• Night Racing in Canary Wharf.......

I decided to enter the GE Canary Wharf Super Sprint Night Tri held last Thurs in a bid to sharpen up my transitions and have a bit of race practise and a good, hard training session with the Olympics only 5 weeks away.

The race is part of the British Triathlon Super Series and the format was a heat and then final scenario – 400m swim, 9,8km bike and 2.1kn run for both. 30 girls started, with 15 going through to the final.A unique event racing at night in amongst the towering skyscrapers of Canary Wharf, a stunning backdrop.

In true London style, I arrived a bit late due to the heavy traffic and missed the briefing. It took about 2 hours to travel 20km across London. James, my coach, insisted it would be a great idea to criss cross the Thames, North, South, North , South to get there. We also decided it might be nice to drive over Tower Bridge to take a picture of the Olympic rings – 25m in length, hanging from the top.

After our tourist journey across London I was a little late and was penalised to the bottom of the startlist for the race start. I was out for a bit of fun anyway so wasn’t too bothered. There was a nice, quality little field with some Aussies, an American, the Brits and me, the lone Saffa.

I tried to conserve as much energy as possible in the heats but my body felt very tired and heavy on the bike and run – not surprising given the monster training block I’d just had. We set off for the final at 8-45pm with a large crowd of bankers(suits) and city workers drinking their beers and cheering us on…..not much else for them to do since England had been knocked out of the Euro 2012 football.

In the final it felt like my body had woken up a bit and I managed to cruise to 3rd spot behind my little friend Katie Hewison (current World Duathlon Champion) and the seasoned ITU pro Liz Blatchford in 2nd. We kindly agreed to not spray eachother with champagne on the podium but to rather spray the crowd instead. It was then time to tuck into a big Nandos chicken burger and back home for my much needed bed!
