• The year that was

Here I sit, it’s October, the season is over and I’m enjoying a relaxing season break.

2013, what a year, and quite frankly one I’d rather forget.

I’m not one for excuses but I honestly think I did not realise at all how much 2012 and the lead up to the Olympics took out of me. My performances this year were, without a shadow of a doubt not very impressive. Don’t get me wrong, there were still some good results – African Champ, European Cup podium, top 10 Yokohama, however I expected so much more of myself but was unable to deliver as well as having a bit of bad luck.

I do take great heart (or maybe relief!) in scrolling through the London 2012 Olympic results and noticing that it was not just me who failed to make an impact on the circuit this year. I think people underestimate how much an Olympic year takes out of you and the difficulty in coming back the following year from such a high. I’ve spoken to fellow Olympians who raced alongside me and I’m pleased to say I’m not alone.

However, what this year has done is to make me hungry again. If I can say I felt deflated at the end of last season, I feel uber motivated now. I can’t wait for winter training to start and to get back at it next year to express my full potential.

I’d like to take this huge opportunity to thank all of my sponsors and supporters over this past year. Without you guys I would not be able to do what I do:

Bikelab Richmond – For supplying me with a top of the range Scott Foil bike, FFWD carbon race wheels & unlimited maintainance 24/7.

Iffley Road – For kitting me out in the most stylish, comfortable & gorgeously classic running kit.

Zone 3 wetsuits – For sponsoring me with the fastest & most comfy wetsuit on the market-my fastest t1 at the Olympics says it all!

Amanzi Swimwear – For ensuring that I’m kitted out in the grooviest, funkiest, most stylish cozzies-the envy of everyone poolside.

Optima Racing Team – For assisting me with club fees. Bestest triathlon club ever!

Triathlon South Africa – Financial support in getting me to races – would be impossible without it!

Daniel Doy Massage Therapist – For keeping me injury free throughout the season & rehab from my crash/broken ribs.

Scott Sports UK – For kitting me out in the best performing cycling gear & shoes.

Gu Energy UK – For ensuring I’m fuelled in racing & training.

So here’s to burying 2013 and looking forward to the excitement that 2014 holds.
