• We’re going to the Olympics!

Hello Everyone! I’ve finally decided to start a Blog so welcome to you all and I hope to give you all a bit more insight on my trials and tribulations as a pro triathlete.

On 6 June I found out that I would be representing South Africa at the London 2012 Olympics. It’s weird to explain my initial reaction and how I felt. I didn’t know the team was being announced that day to be honest. I started seeing a few tweets filtering through about Olympic team selection and saw Richard Murray’s name (my SA teammate). I then knew that they must’ve announced the team. I had a sick but excited feeling in my stomach…..had I made it, would my dream be realised or destroyed? Eventually I found a website that had the team on it and scrolled down to ‘Triathlon’…..Gillian Sanders….I’m in I’m in, whoooo hooooo. To be honest I felt more relieved than anything else, the waiting had been killing me. I just wanted to know so that I could either begin preparing properly or alternatively, get on with whatever I was going to do next.

It took a few days to hit that I was now going to be an Olympian and that I’d fulfilled my childhood dream of getting there. Newspapers and magazines began to call and messages flooded in from everywhere. No need to pinch myself, it was really happening!

Now that things have calmed down, I’m in my final preparation phase for the games in London where I currently reside, with my race being less than 6 weeks away. Sometimes I cannot believe that merely 18 months ago I was sitting in an office in London working as a full time lawyer. It has been quite a journey. I will share some of that journey with you in my next post….until then!
