• What's in store for 2013

We’re well into 2013 now – can you believe it’s nearly the end of January, time flies when you’re having fun!

I’m now well into my winter training, building a great base, having kicked off again in mid November. This is the first full winter training phase that I’m ever going to have. For a change, I don’t have to worry about running around doing early season races to gain points as I had to do the past 2 years due to Olympic qualification.

This has given me a great opportunity to focus on a lot of technique work in the pool. I have more or less focussed solely on technique work for the first 6 weeks of my winter training. This is the first time I’ve been able to do this and hopefully this will pay dividends come summer. It has been very trying at times, but I keep having to look at the bigger picture and the goal to consistently make the front swim pack this coming season.

My aims this year are to race less and travel less. I want to rock up at every race fresh and hungry on that startline. In 2012 I was in a situation where I had to race certain races and accumulate points up until a deadline for Olympic qualification. It was exhausting, physically and emotionally.

So 2013….my main aim will be to finish consistently in the top 10 in the World Triathlon Series. This will be no easy feat at all – I have some amazing competitors that I will be up against but I’m so excited for the challenge. I will do this by racing less, travelling less and racing fresh.

2 and a half years ago when I told people I was going to try to qualify for the Olympic Games, they thought I was bonkers. I knew with hard work and many sacrifices that I could do it. I never for one moment gave up on my dream. There were many obstacles and curveballs thrown at me – from financial to simply people not believing in me. It’s weird, but when people told me it couldn’t be done, I wanted it even more and to prove everybody wrong….and I did. Don’t ever give up on your dreams or let people tell you it can’t be done, because if you really want it, it can.

So here’s to 2013. I will be kicking off my season come early April and am so looking forward to it. So, dear people, my final words for today – don’t ever give up on your dreams or let someone tell you it can’t be done, because with hard work and belief, it can!
